A real ' Stone Soup, is the only apparent ingredient, Mulligatawny soup ' soup ' is just a hint of curry powder. Practically speaking, it is commonly served as an appetizer or meal in Indian restaurants catering to foreigners. In this case it is usually the chicken soup with curry spices.
I'm not trying to discredit the authenticity of the soup right off the bat. Noting that the British enjoy a soup as an appetizer, soup and Mulligatawny soup curry is basically just an attenuated (and there is no such thing in India as "curry" in any case, even though that's another story).
Mulligatawny soup (' Pepe ' water ' in Tamil) have an origin as a rather abundant lentils curry (although not a dhal), and perhaps a version of it was first served to the British. Noting the preference for British meat, lentils have been replaced by chicken, but the name was left.
I never cooked lentil version of the dish, although the recipes are available should you wish to have a go at it. I love to cook chicken restaurant's version of this delicious soup, and I believe that as Indian as I, Chinese sweet and sour pork (another creation Westernized). If there are any Indian markets near you, you're lucky. Use fresh garam masala (a type of curry powder) to the soup with mustard and fresh curry leaves seedpod if you can get it. Keep it simple stock and drizzle with fresh juice before serving. Add rice, coconut milk and almonds are very good even if you want a hearty dish.
